Summarizing ASHI’s mission statement, we are to provide education and value for your membership. In addition, we must protect our chapters and ASHI, which is why we have a chapter policy.
Most of us have incorporated our businesses to protect our families and our assets. Similarly, it makes sense that we should incorporate our chapters. Incorporation provides a line of defense in case of any legal action by protecting your chapter officers, directors and members. If you have a legal circumstance, ASHI is here to help. We have a $1 million dollar D&O (Directors and Officers) insurance policy which is free to every chapter that complies with the chapter policy.
Incorporation is required by the IRS for tax-exemption; they have been known to impose taxes and penalties on chapters that fall out of compliance. The ASHI chapter policy is designed to mitigate this risk.
ASHI is doing everything we can to assist you with your chapter status. This document outlines the steps necessary to maintain your chapter status.
Some groups may choose to remain or become a chapter while others may want to be a meeting group (MG). This is ok. Both groups are made up of ASHI members with CoR representation and the ability to have meetings and education events. Chapters, though, have certain responsibilities and benefits that meeting groups do not.
If you choose to become or stay a meeting group (MG), consider having your members join the nearest chapter. You may have the “the best of both worlds”: protection of “chapter membership” yet still operate as you do now.
Our responsibility is to make sure you understand the difference between the two so your group can select which is best for your members. Remember, we are here to help and protect you.
If you have any questions please call either one of us and thank you, in advance, for your support.
